It’s April 10th and I turn 70 today. As a kid, 70 seemed older than dirt. Now? I am simply happy to be on the right side of the dirt. At 70, 80 doesn’t look so old. Seriously, it’s all about perspective, isn’t it? Balancing the good and the bad, along with the choices we have made in our lives.

In 2021, my eye doctor, Shannon Moore, said my eye pressure was high. Elevated eye pressure, known as ocular hypertension, is a significant risk factor for, and can lead to, open-angle glaucoma and blindness. I followed her advice, and all has gone well until my most recent eye exam.

Of the many, many things I thought I might be doing at Rohan Farm this morning, an Emu roundup was not in the top five or ten. In fact, it wasn’t even in the top 100. Still, there I was, helping Mike (no, not Doug) load two Emus into the back of his truck. You can’t make this stuff up.

The coffee cup is old and has chips and a crack in it. It was a gift from my buddy Tim Stouffer in 1980 when he visited us in Germany, while returning from a trip to Russia. I think he bought it in a train station somewhere. Tim passed away a little over a year ago, and I’ve thought about whether I should continue using the mug, or put it on a shelf somewhere.

Well shut my mouth! For the first time, I won a lottery here in Virginia through the state Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) Store. My prize? A bottle of Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year Old Bourbon for $150. It’s almost impossible to find, and if you do find it, it’s usually over $700 a bottle.
