When Donald Trump said, “Pretend I’m on the ballot,” voters took him at his word. Yesterday, the country responded with a resounding, undeniable message of rejection. Plainly, he still doesn’t understand what is on Americans’ minds.
Be honest. Did any of you see the size of this victory ahead of time? We are still waiting on election results in a number of locations, but the Democrats currently hold 54 seats in the Senate and 245 in the House. Pick your description – Blue Wave, Tsunami, Blu-Nami, avalanche. The people answered Mr. Trump.
Here in Virginia, it was decisive. Locally, we returned Congressman Suhas Subramanyam to Washington. Senator Mark Warner won easily, and statewide, we scored two major pickups: Shannon Taylor defeated Rob Wittman in the 1st Congressional District, and Elaine Luria reclaimed the 2nd District from Jen Kiggans. That expands our delegation to an impressive 8–3 Democratic majority.
Across the United States, Americans spoke as well. Taking back the House and the Senate matters to all of us for the next two years. Whether stopping incompetent appointments, investigating corruption, or checking the war with Iran, the Democrats now hold the power. We need to make sure we show we can govern.
The Senate elections were particularly telling. Americans voted for competence in both South and North Carolina, decency in Ohio, against greed in Kansas, and against corruption in Texas. Maine, Iowa, Michigan—each state delivered its own distinct rebuke to Trump and his allies in the Republican Party.
None of this happened by accident. As Americans, we all made a difference. We voted and talked to our friends about voting. There are those who donated time or money. Those who wrote letters to the editor or postcards, put up signs, knocked doors or phone banked. There are those who protested. And of course, all of those who worked on Election Day, whether greeting voters outside, or ensuring voter integrity inside. Every single one of us made a difference.
Some Republicans are blaming Hegseth, but of course, they aren’t blaming his boss. Trump himself is blaming the fake news, including Fox. JD Vance is saying they lost because of the war.
The Republicans still don’t get it. The war may have served as a catalyst, particularly due to its effect on the economy, but it was only a catalyst.
The scales have fallen from Americans’ eyes. They see the lying. They are tired of the hypocrisy. They see the corruption. They are watching the incompetence. They are aware of the tech bros and their attempts to influence the elections. People shake their heads at the continued Republican focus on cultural issues, whose only purpose is to divide us.
Yes, the war may have started the turn in America, but it is all out there now. The Republicans aren’t going to be able to put the toothpaste back in the tube. If they don’t figure out that real change must happen within their party and with their blind allegiance to Trump, they will become irrelevant for the next several years.
Here in Virginia, election season never truly ends. As we turn our focus toward the General Assembly races in 2027, the message is clear: if Republicans continue to tether themselves to Trump’s agenda, they should expect the exact same result, with Democrats expanding their current control of both the Senate and the House.
Give yourselves a pat on the back and enjoy America’s victory. We will all return to work soon. There is much to be done to stop the hemorrhaging and start the cleanup of America.
But for now? For now, let’s celebrate.
God Bless The United States of America.

Some Bulwark guys predicted 54-55 Senate seats in the past couple of weeks. But no one would have predicted the scope of the Texas wins.
