A Turning Point

It has been a long year for many of us, and yet, I have hope. I believe we may have reached a turning point as 2025 ends. A local Fauquier County MAGA man, as MAGA as they come, has turned on Trump. When someone like him calls Trump a “f^cking piece of sh!t”, you know the world is changing.

We have all watched Trump for the past ten years. His ups. His downs. His continued assaults on America, and on decency. No bar is too low for the president to limbo under.  His referral to the over 1,800 Marines who died in the World War I Battle of Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed and the cemetery as “filled with losers”.  His disparagement of John McCain. His criticism of Gold Star parents who had the temerity to criticize him.  His suggestion that General Milley should be tried for treason and executed. If you aren’t on the Trump bus, you are his enemy. 

 Which brings us to now. When Rob Reiner and his wife were recently murdered, Trump took the opportunity to blame it on Reiner’s “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” His full text, posted on Truth Social, is here:

 

For me, there was no surprise in this post. It was Trump being Trump and I have come to expect nothing less from the man. Interestingly, it was a post too far for one of our local MAGA men. Let’s call him “Luke.”

Luke and I have met a couple of times over the years. Luke is as MAGA as they get. He has been a voracious defender of The Donald and a prolific poster on social media. Sometimes he used “facts.” Sometimes he used viciousness. Always, he defended Trump. That recently changed and Luke is, surprisingly, no longer supporting Trump. 

Luke posted twice after Trump’s recent Reiner rant. He is now disowning Trump. I don’t know if he is a Rob Reiner fan, or if he just became tired of Trump’s continuing self-sabotage. In either case, a switch flipped. Here are photos of his two posts.

 “We’ve been fucked for a decade.” Those are strong words for a staunch MAGA Man. I read the posts several times, and then, like Luke, I had my own epiphany.

 The protests going on across America right now are great. The recent election results here in Virginia and across the country are great. The No Kings rallies are growing larger and that is great. The slow peeling away of Majorie Taylor Greene and other Republicans from Trump is great.

All those things are excellent, and maybe America IS slowly becoming great again. Having said that, for me the sign we are reaching a turning point happened right here in little ol’ Fauquier County. When Luke, among the most MAGA of all MAGA people, calls Trump a “fucking piece of shit”, I have hope for America’s future. I know we still have much work in front of us, but I am heartened.

Yes, 2025 has been a tough year, but I am encouraged going into 2026. Luke and I may not agree on much, but we both agree Trump must go and I take that as a sign of progress.
